An HIV-positive patient may be at increased risk for cataract formation if certain risk factors are present.
Patient selection: HIV-positive
Risk factors for cataract formation:
(1) cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis
(2) CD4 lymphocyte count <= 200 per µL
(3) HAART therapy
(4) retinal detachment with silicone oil tamponade
(5) glaucoma
A patient who undergoes cataract surgery following silicone oil tamponade for CMV-associated retinal detachment are at risk for posterior capsule opacification.
