Description

Mycosis fungoides can be diagnosed in histologic examination of a skin biopsy using specific criteria.

The atypical lymphocytes seen in Mycosis fungoides are T cells with scant cytoplasm and hyperchromatic, convoluted ("cerebriform") nuclei.

Histologic features seen in mycosis fungoides:

(1) multiple Pautrier microaggregates

(2) diffuse infiltration with individual atypical lymphocytes into the epidermis

(3) a few small intraepidermal clusters of a few atypical lymphocytes

(4) a few individual intraepidermal atypical lymphocytes

(5) dense upper dermal bandlike interface infiltrate that includes atypical lymphocytes

(6) mild to moderate polymorphous upper dermal infiltrate that includes atypical lymphocytes and has a focal interface pattern

(7) extension of the infiltrate into the deep dermis
