Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. The diagnosis of a hepatitis can be made if certain criteria are met.


 

Criterion for hepatitis - all of the following:

(1) 2 or more of the following:

(1a) fever (> 38°C)

(1b) nausea

(1c) vomiting

(1d) abdominal pain

(1e) anorexia

(1f) jaundice

(1g) history of transfusion within the past 3 months

(2) no other recognized cause (hereditary hepatitis, toxic hepatitis, bile duct obstruction)

(3) one or more of the following

(3a) positive serologic tests for viral hepatitis (A, B, C, delta, other)

(3b) abnormal liver function tests

(3c) presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in urine, oropharyngeal secretions or other source

• The risk associated with blood transfusion has been significantly reduced by testing for potential pathogens after collection.
