Eating for pleasure may be seen in patients with morbid obesity. This can impact the effectiveness of various strategies for weight control in these patients.


 

Features of hedonic hunger:

(1) The person derives significant pleasure from eating.

(2) Eating is done for pleasure rather than for survival or to meet basic metabolic needs.

(3) The search for pleasurable and palatable foods may lead to a diet high in fats and high caloric foods.

 

Hedonic eating as an addictive behavior:

(1) The person may obsess about, crave or be preoccupied with eating palatable foods.

(2) The person engages in binge eating.
