Description

While gardening has many health benefits and other rewards it can also pose a number of hazards to the gardener.


 

Infectious hazards:

(1) tetanus

(2) bacterial infection (Pseudomonas, Legionella, mycobacteria, Salmonella, Yersinia, etc)

(3) fungal infection (sporotrichosis, histoplasmosis)

(4) parasites (Baylisascaris, other)

 

Toxic exposures:

(1) herbicides and pesticides

(2) contaminated soil and water (heavy metals, radiation, etc)

(3) toxic plants

(4) spiders

(5) bees and yellow jackets

(6) silicosis

 

Weather:

(1) sun burn

(2) heat exhaustion

(3) frostbite

(4) trench foot

 

Trauma:

(1) puncture wounds

(2) falling objects

(3) blisters and bruises to skin

(4) animal exposure

 

Musculoskeletal:

(1) joints (back, knees, ankles)

(2) muscle strain

(3) over-exertion

 

Miscellaneous:

(1) poison ivy allergy

(2) phytophotodermatitis

(3) heart attack

(4) heartbreak (if animals eat all of the vegetables)
