While ordering drugs on-line can be easy and convenient, it can expose the consumer to a number of hazards. A fraudulent website may have no scruples and it may be difficult if not impossible to get compensation if harm results.


 

Risk of ordering drugs from an unscrupulous on-line pharmacy website:

(1) loss of privacy, with sale of personal information

(2) economic loss, with identity theft or credit card fraud

(3) correct medication but ineffective (expired, dilute, etc)

(4) correct medication but toxic (concentrated, unapproved additives, etc)

(5) substitution (fake)

(6) addition of toxic compounds

(7) legal problems if the medication is a controlled substance

(8) legal problems if there is not a legal prescription

(9) receipt of inaccurate or misleading information

(10) incorrectly packaged, handled and/or shipped (resulting in inactivation, contamination, etc)

• The addition of toxic compounds may be intentional or accidental. A toxic compound may be a by-product of improper synthesis or shoddy purification.
