Description

Being a sex worker often can be a difficult life.


 

Hazards:

(1) sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, HSV and hepatitis B

(2) physical and emotional abuse at home and at work

(3) harassment by police and criminal record

(4) drugs and/or alcohol use

(5) psychiatric problems, especially depression

(6) stigma

(7) suboptimal health care

 

where:

• Sex workers may exposed to antibiotic resistant bacterial STDs.

• Sex workers are at an increased risk for homicide.

 

Factors affecting the risk:

(1) presence of pimp or sex trafficker

(2) work environment (streets, indoors, escort, etc)

(3) number and types of clients

(4) use of condoms

(5) gender and gender orientation

(6) collaboration with other sex workers

(7) fetishes

(8) local regulation of the sex trade
