Description

Children may hide in a car trunk or cast-off refrigerator. Serious problems can arise if they cannot get out and if they are not found.

Risks of being entrapped:

(1) asphyxiation if the area has an air-tight seal (which also will muffle any cries for help)

(2) exposure to extreme heat in the summer or cold in the winter

(3) dehydration

These outcomes can be avoided by:

(1) educating children about the hazards of hiding in a closed container

(2) removing doors from refrigerators before leaving unattended

(3) making sure that a car trunk has an inside release or has an exit into the passenger compartment

(4) looking into any enclosed space if a child is missing

(5) keeping car doors locked and the keys out of reach of children
