Description

Improper handling of perchloric acid or perchlorates can result in the formation of explosive compounds. Because of potential hazards the use both perchloric acid and perchlorates should be avoided whenever possible.

These compounds should only be handled by persons who are totally familiar with recommended handling procedures.

The compounds should be kept in unbreakable and inert containers with appropriate stoppers.

Perchloric acid (HClO4) is an oxidizing agent that can react with oxidizable organic or inorganic compounds. This is especially important when the acid is heated and fuming.

Perchloric acid should be kept away from any dehydrating acid capable of concentrating the perchloric acid to a strength > 70%.

These compounds should be used in hoods with good ventilation. The hoods and ventilation ducts should be washed out frequently to prevent build-up of compounds that could be explosive.
