Description

Blunt trauma associated with a boxing match is the primary health hazard for a boxer. However, a boxer is at risk for a number of other health hazards.


 

A boxer may be at risk for:

(1) use of performance enhancing substances (anabolic steroids, etc)

(2) injuries during training, such as overuse injuries

(3) exposure to infected body fluids from other fighters

(4) dehydration associated with rapid weight loss to meet a weight limit

(5) rhabdomyolysis

(6) sickling complications if the patient has sickle cell disease

(7) travel-related problems (infection, jet lag, other)

(8) sexually-transmitted disease
