Description

Becoming entrapped during an earthquake can be associated with many hazards. Rescue of trapped persons is one of the first things done following an earthquake.


 

Hazards for an entrapped person:

(1) hypoxia (consumption of all available oxygen in an enclosed space)

(2) being unable breath (due to weight of rubble)

(3) being unable to attend to a hemorrhaging wound

(4) crush injury, especially during aftershocks

(5) drowning

(6) asphyxiation from released/escaping gases

(7) fire

(8) smoke inhalation

(9) electrocution

(10) hypothermia

(11) dehydration

(12) starvation

(13) lack of required medical support (ventilator, oxygen, medications, etc.)

(14) chemical exposure
