Description

Hand washing is one of the cornerstones of infection control. Failure to hand wash after animal contact at a petting zoo or other public setting have been followed by outbreaks of infectious disease with deaths.


 

How to hand wash:

(1) Wet the hands with running water.

(2) Place soap into the palms of the hands.

(3) Rub the hands together vigorously to make a lather.

(4) Scrub the hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds, paying attention to under the fingernails.

(5) Rinse the hands free of the soap and lather.

(6) Dry the hands with a disposable towel.

(7) Use the towel to turn off the water.

 

Who may need assistance:

(1) young children

(2) people with disabilities

 

When to wash the hands:

(1) after exiting the animal area

(2) after using the toilet

(3) before eating

(4) before putting anything in the mouth

(5) before preparing foods
