Loytsch et al developed a grading scheme for a meniscal tear in the knee as seen on magnetic resonance images (MRI).
MRI imaging: T1 weighted (800/20)
Intrameniscal MRI Findings
Grade
irregular marginated signal within the meniscus that does not abut or communicate with the articular margin
1
linear signal that does not abut or communicate with an articular margin
2
linear signal intensity that abuts or communicates with an articular margin
3A
globular signal intensity that abuts or communicates with an articular margin
3B
where:
• An articular margin is either the superior or inferior margin of the meniscus that directly faces the articular cartiplateau. The meniscocapsular junction is not considered an articular margin.
