Description

The Goldwater Rule was formulated by the American Psychiatric Association in response to psychiatrists making pronouncements about Barry Goldwater's mental status while running for president.

The Goldware rule says that it is unethical for a psychiatrist:

(1) to offer a personal opinion to the media as a professional diagnosis

(2) to not have examined the person being discussed

(3) to act without being granted proper authorization to make a statement

If the psychiatrist has examined the patient, then HIPAA and other rules may also apply if certain information is disclosed.
