Description

An infant with the Pierre Robin sequence may have recurrent airway obstruction. One method to manage this is to tie the anterior tongue to the lower lip. The GILLS score can help to identify a patient for whom the procedure may or may not be a success.


 

Parameters:

(1) gastroesophageal reflux disease (G)

(2) preoperative intubation (I)

(3) late surgical intervention (L)

(4) low birth weight (L)

(5) syndromic diagnosis (S)

 

Each item is scored 1 if present or 0 if absent.

 

total score =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• A score <=2 is associated with successful tongue-lip adhesion (TLA).

• A score >= 3 was associated with failure in 43%.
