Cowan et al developed the gastroschisis prognostic score (GPS) to evaluate a neonate with gastroschisis. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Canada.
Patient selection: neonate with gastroschisis
Parameters (withn 6 hour of birth):
(1) bowel matting
(2) bowel atresia
(3) bowel perforation
(4) bowel necrosis

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 12
• The higher the score the worse the prognosis.
• A score >= 4 had a mortality rate of 11-16% vs 1% for a score < 4.
• A score >= 2 was associated with higher morbidity.
Performance:
• Kappa values were between 0.86 and 0.91.
