Description

The outcome following surgical management of tibial fracture non-union can be assessed by functional measures. Paley et al used a number of criteria for the functional outcome following use of the Ilizarov technique for non-union of a tibial fracture.

Criteria:

(1) significant limp

(2) equinus rigidity of the ankle or other joint stiffness

(3) soft tissue sympathetic dystrophy

(4) pain

(5) inactivity

Features of soft tissue dystrophy:

(1) skin hypersensitivity

(2) insensitivity over the sole of the foot

(3) decubitus

Inactivity involved one or both of the following:

(1) unemployed because of leg injury

(2) inability to return to usual activities because of leg injury

Thus inactivity is a measure of functional disability.
