Description

Kim et al reported the Multidimensional Frailty Score. This can identify an older adult who may be at risk for postoperative mortality. The authors are from the Seoul National University.

Patient selection: >= 65 years of age undergoing surgery

Parameters:

(1) cancer (malignant disease)

(2) Charlson Comorbidity Score (CCI)

(3) serum albumin in g/dL

(4) modified Barthel index for activities of daily living (ADL)

(5) Lawton and Brody index for instrumental ADL

(6) cognitive function

(7) risk of delirium by the Nursing Delirium Screening Scale

(8) Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA)

(9) midarm circumference in cm

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 15

• A score > 5 indicates frailty. Frailty is associated with increased postoperative mortality and longer hospitalizations.
