Description

A patient infected with HIV may develop frailty, which is associated with a worse prognosis.


 

Risk factors:

(1) advanced HIV disease (low CD4 count, high HIV viral load)

(2) failure to receive antiretroviral therapy

(3) low serum albumin (malnutrition)

(4) older age

 

Manifestations:

(1) impaired mobility and greater weakness

(2) greater comorbidity

(3) depression

(4) socioeconomic problems (unemployment, etc)

(5) increase in hospitalizations
