Description

Fractures involving the base of the metacarpal bone for the thumb can be divided into 4 basic types.

Basic types:

(1) epibasal

(2) Bennett's

(3) Rolando

(4) comminuted

Type

Number of Bone Fragments

Description

epibasal, transverse

2

horizontal to the base, extra-articular

epibasal, oblique

2

at an angle to the base, extra-articular

Bennett

2

intra-articular

Rolando "Y"

3

element parallel to long axis intra-articular; fracture line running perpendicular to the long axis of the bone is at an angle to the base, giving a "Y" shape

Rolando "T"

3

element parallel to long axis intra-articular; fracture line running perpendicular to the long axis of the bone is horizontal to base, giving a "T" shape
