Description

Bennett described the fractional deposition of inhaled particles suspended in an aerosol. The author is from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The deposition fraction is the mass fraction of inhaled particles that are deposited in the respiratory tract. It does not state where particles deposit along the respiratory tract.

Parameters:

(1) mass inhaled

(2) mass exhaled

total deposition fraction = DF =

= ((mass inhaled) - (mass exhaled)) / (mass inhaled) * 100%

Physiologic factors affecting the deposition fraction:

(1) breathing rate

(2) breathholding

(3) depth of breathing (tidal volume)

(4) flow rates

(5) size or caliber of the individual's airways
