Description

Axelsson developed a 4-point scale for predicting the risk of developing caries based on the Plaque Formation Rate Index (PFRI) and salivary level of Streptococcus mutans (SM). This can help identify patients who may benefit from preventative therapies and closer monitoring. The author is from Karlstad, Sweden.

The PFRI is described previously in the chapter and reflects the amount of dental plaque that accumulates at 24 hours after a professional cleaning.

The concentration of salivary Streptococcus mutans (SM) is a semiquantitative test for colony forming units (CFU) per mL of saliva. Axelsson used the Strep mutans test strip, which uses a selective media containing high sucrose concentrations and bacitracin.
