Description

Huwez et al developed a formula to predict the body surface area of pediatric patient based on the age in months. The authors are from the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow.

Parameters:

(1) age in months

body surface area in square meters =

= (0.00594 * (age in months)) + 0.503

where:

• There are approximately 30.417 days in the average month (365 divided by 12).

Performance:

• The correlation with the formula of Dubois and Dubois showed an r value of 0.94.

• There is no adjustment for gender, height or weight. Performance is probably better in early childhood than during adolescence.

• The population appears to be Scots. The formula may need to be modified for other racial groups (like Asians).
