Dilute solutions of formaldehyde are used as a tissue fixative or environmental decontaminant. Formaldehyde is a gas that is stabilized in a solution referred to as formalin that is 37% formaldehyde by weight.
Molecular weight of formaldehyde: 30.03 grams
1 liter of 100% formalin is approximately 37% (370 grams) formaldehyde, or 12.32 M. Commercial solutions may range form 36.5 to 38% formaldehyde, and contains 10-15% methanol as a stabilizer.
A 10% formalin solution is 3.7% formaldehyde, or 1.23 M.
A 3% formalin solution is 1.11% formaldehyde, or 0.37 M.
