Description

Providencia alcalifaciens is usually considered a commensal bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract. However, it can cause a foodborne gastroenteritis under certain circumstances. It has been implicated in outbreaks in Japan, the Czech Republic and Kenya.


 

Features of foodborne gastroenteritis with Providencia alcalifaciens:

(1) It tends to affect young children.

(2) It presents with diarrhea and other signs of gastroenteritis.

(3) Stool culture shows a predominance of Providencia alcalifaciens.

(4) Culture of implicated food grows Providencia alcalifaciens.

(5) Other causes of gastroenteritis are excluded.

 

It is a cause traveler’s diarrhea.

 

It can be prevented with good hygiene, proper hand washing, proper food storage and proper food handling.
