Food neophobia is one kind of eating behavior that can affect a person’s diet. This can impact a person’s intake of fruits, vegetables or essential nutritents.
A person with food neophobia:
(1) The person refuses to eat or avoids “new” foods.
(2) The person eats foods that are known and familiar.
Opposite: neophilic (loves to eat new or exotic foods)
Differential diagnosis:
(1) picky/fussy eating (resists both familiar and new foods)
(2) specific dislike for a food’s taste or texture
(3) anorexia
(4) obsessive eating (eats only one kind of food)
