Description

Igniting a drink with high ethanol content can be a bemusing but potentially risky practice.


 

The practice consists of:

(1) pouring liquour with a high ethanol content into a glass or layering the same over a regular cocktail

(2) lighting the alcohol with a match

(3) drinking the liquour in one gulp while it is flaming

 

Types of injuries that can occur:

(1) burns around the face if the person hesitates

(2) burns from spilling the drink onto clothing or carpet

(3) hand burns from holding a hot glass too long

(4) burns related to an inappropriate glass (Styrofoam, etc)

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) inexperience

(2) being intoxicated

(3) being uncoordinated

(4) having a beard or wearing something flammable

 

Having someone sober and a fire extinguisher handy can be good ideas to avoid complications.
