Description

The home or apartment of a person who hoards may present a number of hazards related to fire.

The risk of fire is greater. Because a room contains more material than a less cluttered home, there is more material to burn (greater fire loading) and the potential for direct spread.

Risk to the occupant and responder:

(1) blocked doors and windows

(2) difficulty navigating a room, especially when there is smoke

(3) toxic smoke and gases

(4) risk for tripping and falling over, especially on stairs

(5) risk for material falling down onto the person

(6) difficulty locating and rescuing someone who may be unconscious
