The finding of shelter is important for a homeless person, especially when the weather is inclement.


 

Types of shelter:

(1) van or vehicle

(2) with friend or companion

(3) with relatives

(4) single room occupancy hotel

(5) organized shelter

(6) other (on the street, in a park, in an abandoned building)

 

Features to consider when evaluating a shelter:

(1) warm and dry

(2) need to conform to rules

(3) personal safety and security of possessions

(4) affordability (cost and ability to pay)

(5) need to leave and move on during the day

(6) need to arrive by a certain time

(7) length of time allowed (stable vs need to move frequently)

(8) being hassled by the police, property owners or others

(9) unpleasant features (noise, filth, smell, rodents, insects)
