Description

The floppy eyelid syndrome consists of a collection of clinical findings associated with a floppy upper eyelid. Mechanical factors over several years appear instrumental in its development.

Clinical features:

(1) usually middle-aged or elderly

(2) usually male

(3) mentally retarded

(4) obese

(5) easily everted and floppy upper eyelid

(6) papillary conjunctivitis beneath the edges of the upper eyelid

(7) habit of sleeping face down (causes eyelid/s to be in contact with a pillow) or chronically rubbing the eye

Surgery on the upper eyelid with resection of redundant tissue usually will correct the problem.
