Description

Fatigue can have a significant impact on patients with sickle cell anemia. Screening for fatigue should be part of the routine patient assessment.


 

Features of fatigue:

(1) The patient experiences a sustained sense of exhaustion.

(2) The patient feels overwhelmed by it.

(3) It has a negative impact on the patient's functional ability.

 

Common factors that can contribute to fatigue:

(1) pain

(2) poor sleep quality

(3) impaired pulmonary function

(4) deconditioning

(5) depression

(6) anemia

 

Other factors that can impact fatigue:

(1) infection or other condition associated with the release of cytokines

(2) medication(s) that can cause fatigue

(3) anxiety and stress

 

A patient with sickle cell anemia and fatigue is at risk for:

(1) decreased quality of life

(2) disability (social, work, activities of daily living)

(3) poor physical fitness

(4) impaired cognitive function
