Description

A gun firing a blank cartridge can cause fatal injury if it is fired at certain locations..


 

Mechanism of injury:

(1) blast/gas wave

(2) discharged blank material

 

Risk for fatal injury:

(1) contact discharge

(2) discharge adjacent to a vital structure

(3) full load

neck

laceration of carotid artery or juegular vein with massive bleeding

calvarium

massive brain injury

mid-chest

ventricular rupture with hemopericardium

lateral chest

pneumo- or hemothorax

abdomen

vascular or visceral rupture

inguinal region

laceration of iliac arteries or veins

any site

air embolism
