Description

A high serum IgE concentration can result in a false-positive radioallergosorbent test (RAST).

A high serum IgE concentration can be encountered in some patients with parasitic infections and in patients with the hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES).

Findings:

(1) high serum IgE concentration (> 3,000 IU/mL)

(2) positive RAST test in the absence of clinical allergy to the target antigen OR all RAST results positive

(3) positive blank reactant chamber with no target antigen

A patient with these features should be evaluated by another method.
