The use of a benzodiazepine sleep aid may be associated with activities that occur while the person is not fully awake and that the person does not recall afterwards.
Examples: temazepam (Restoril), triazolam (Halcion)
Activities may include:
(1) sleep walking
(2) sleep driving
(3) talking on the phone or holding a conversation
(4) making and eating food
These activities can result in accidents, falls, fire or other injuries.
Risk factors:
(1) taking an excessive dose of the benzodiazepine
(2) taking the benzodiazepine together with alcohol
(3) taking the benzodiazepine some time before going to bed
(4) not sleeping a full 8 hours
(5) taking the benzodiazepine with another sedating drug
