Description

The Failed Neck Syndrome (Failed Neck Surgery Syndrome) involves a patient with persistent pain following neck surgery. This is similar to the Failed Back Surgery Syndrome for low back pain.


 

Features of FNS:

(1) history of neck pain or other symptoms associated with a disorder of the cervical spine

(2) history of surgery to correct the defect

(3) symptoms are persistent or worse after the surgery

 

The failure to improve may be a result of:

(1) scarring after surgery

(2) surgical site infection

(3) implant failure

(4) failure to correct the underlying problem

 

Risk factors:

(1) suboptimal patient selection for surgery

(2) inexperience on the part of the surgeon

(3) complication during surgery

(4) unanticipated finding at surgery
