Description

Women who are victims of human trafficking are usually entered into prostitution. They may not cooperate with people who are trying to help them for a number of very good reasons.


 

Reasons for failure to cooperate:

(1) fear

(2) ignorance

(3) negative feelings

(4) problems

 

Fears of a woman who is a victim of human trafficking:

(1) fear of physical violence to self

(2) fear of physical violence to family members back home

(3) fear for reputation if word gets back home

(4) fear of the police

(5) fear of abandonment by people offering help

(6) fear of being watched

(7) fear of informants

(8) fear of deportation back home

(9) fear of prison

(10) fear of having to give evidence in court

 

Ignorance:

(1) customs of the country she is in

(2) language of the country she is in

(3) precisely where she is

(4) lies told by the traffickers

 

Negative feelings:

(1) feeling trapped

(2) feeling contaminated, dirty or ashamed

(3) codependency

(4) post-traumatic stress

 

Problems:

(1) dependence on drugs or alcohol

(2) financial debt claimed by traffickers

(3) sexually transmitted disease acquired as a prostitute

 

The precise issues need to be identified and responded to before a female victim may be willing to cooperate with people trying to help her.
