Description

Certain clinical findings are associated with probable healing of a neuropathic diabetic foot ulcer within 20 weeks using standard therapy. Patients who do not have these findings may benefit from more aggressive therapy. The authors are from the University of Pennsylvania.


 

Findings associated with early ulcer healing (within 20 weeks = 5 months) using standard therapy:

(1) a small ulcer (wound area < 2 square centimeters)

(2) recent onset (< 6 months)

(3) non-White race

 

Factors not affecting early healing:

(1) gender

(2) age

(3) hemoglobin A1c
