A number of factors may contribute to land subsidence. This can be a significant problems in certain parts of the world.


 

Factors contributing to land subsidence:

(1) excessive removal of ground water

(2) removal of natural gas and/or oil

(3) collapse of underground mines

(4) garbage landfill

(5) landfill made of loose materials

(6) high load density associated with heavy buildings

(7) high load density associated with water or ice

(8) liquefaction during an earthquake

(9) release of tectonic plate pressure

(10) dissolution of limestone, salt, gypsum, etc.
