Description

Some patients will avoid or refuse vaccination because of fear or concern about fainting during or after the injection. Identification of risk factors associated with these concerns can help identify patients who may be affected and allows for interventions to improve vaccine delivery.

Predictors of injection fear (based on multivariate analysis):

(1) watching other people receive injections

(2) needle size

(3) fear of pain

(4) history of fainting following an injection

Factors associated with past fainting (based on multivariate analysis):

(1) prior bad experience with injections

(2) unreasonable fear of injections

(3) fear of needles

Factors reducing injection fear:

(1) empathy shown by the medical team

Other factors affecting outcome (from univariate analysis or observations):

(1) A warm room tends to trigger fainting during and after the injections.

(2) Younger patients tend to be more concerned about receiving injections.

(3) A person who feels that the vaccine is necessary is more committed to the process.

(4) Watching the nurse prepare the syringe can cause apprehension in some patients.
