Description

An adult with chronic, recurrent tonsillitis can be expected to have an improved quality of life following tonsillectomy. The benefit is usually greater if the problems prior to surgery was greater.

Factors impacting the quality of life in an adult with recurrent tonsillitis:

(1) visits to the doctor

(2) days of work missed

(3) throat pain and use of analgesics

(4) need for antibiotics

(5) health concerns

(6) obstructive sleep apnea

(7) interference with social and recreational activities

Tonsillectomy in an adult with recurrent tonsillitis is typically elective and free of long-term complications. Occurrence of a major complication following tonsillectomy may introduce a new factor impacting the patient's quality of life.
