Description

Exercise can trigger rhinitis symptoms in certain athletes.


 

Signs and symptoms:

(1) rhinorrhea

(2) nasal congestion

(3) sneezing

(4) post-nasal drip

 

Additional findings:

(1) elevated serum histamine levels

(2) other exercise-induced hypersensitivity reactions (urticaria, asthma)

 

Athletes affected:

(1) runners

(2) cyclists

(3) skiers

(4) swimmers (“swimming-induced rhinitis”)

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) allergic rhinitis associated with exposure of environmental allergens

(2) viral or other infection

 

H1 antihistamines may be effective in reducing manifestations.
