Description

A person who exercises while wearing a nicotine patch may be at risk for increased absorption of nicotine. Some patients may develop nicotine toxicity as a result.

Patient selection: use of a transdermal nicotine patch during exercise

The increase in circulation due to exercise would be expected to increase nicotine absorption compared to rest.

Risk factors for increased nicotine levels:

(1) extreme or prolonged exertion

(2) multiple patches

(3) increased environmental temperature

(4) occlusion over patch

(5) abrasion over patch

(6) other sources of nicotine (smoking, nicotine gum)
