Description

A gift to a physician or other health care provider from a corporation or business may be inappropriate if its intent is to unduly influence decisions affecting patient care. A physician should provide care that focuses first and foremost on the patient's interests and not that of a corporation.


 

Appropriate:

(1) A gift that provides a benefit to patients.

(2) A gift with no substantial value that is related to the physician's work (pens, pads, etc.)

(3) Modest meals at meetings.

(4) Reasonable honoraria to cover expenses for faculty and speakers.

(5) Support for legitimate educational conferences or meetings with full disclosure of financial support and potential sources of conflict.

 

Inappropriate:

(1) direct cash payment whose intent is to serve as an incentive

(2) lavish meals, cruises and vacations

(3) subsidies or reimbursement in excess of costs

(4) failure to disclose financial support or a potential source of conflict

(5) token consulting or advisory arrangements

(6) any gift with a string attached (based on prescribing or ordering behavior)
