A suction system for collection of body fluids or flushing solutions can be evaluated based on its use characteristics. This can help identify a system that should be replaced or to compare alternative devices.


 

General items:

(1) storage space for equipment between use

(2) procedure for setting up the equipment

(3) nursing time required for setting up the equipment

(4) adequacy of suction vacuum

(5) labeling of the container

(6) ability to determine fluid level during collection

(7) capacity of the container

(8) safety system to prevent back flow into vacuum system

(9) nursing time required for taking down the system

 

Items for re-usable system

(10) procedure for emptying canister after use

(11) procedure for decontaminating system

(12) nursing time for decontaminating the system

 

Items for disposable system:

(10) mechanism for sealing disposable container after use

(11) disposal box for filled containers

(12) storage of full containers until collection

 

Responses:

(1) satisfactory vs unsatisfactory

(2) 5 point Likert scale, from 4 (perfectly adequate) to 0 (inadequate)
