Description

Dykes et al developed an equation for predicting the probability in death for neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis. This can help identify infants who may require more aggressive care. The authors are from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Specimens: collected on admission

Parameters:

(1) arterial pH

(2) platelet count in 10^9/L

(3) presence or absence of congenital defects

X =

= (-7.99 * (arterial pH)) - (0.015 * (points for platelet count)) + (1.47 * (points for congenital defects)) + 60.44

probability of death =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))

Limitations:

• The mortality rate may have improved in the 20 years since the study was performed.
