Description

Toxicologic and chemical analyses may be important in a medicolegal post-mortem examination. Mistakes in specimen collection and handling may introduce errors that may compromise the investigation.


 

Specimen collection errors:

(1) using contaminated containers

(2) collecting insufficient material

(3) failure to collect different kinds of material (blood, vitreous fluid, urine, bile, viscera, hair, nail clippings)

(4) failure to collect insect larvae for analysis

 

Specimen handling errors:

(1) using unlabeled or mislabeled containers

(2) failure to maintain chain of custody

(3) allowing specimens to deteriorate prior to analysis

(4) properly stored specimens

(5) failure to retain backup material

(6) requesting excessive or unreasonable testing
