Description

A man who has received an electrical injury may develop erectile dysfunction (ED) afterwards.


 

Features of an electrical injury that increase the risk of ED:

(1) high voltage or lightning

(2) path of the current through lower trunk (whole body, upper extremity to lower extremity, lower to lower extremity involvement)

 

Types of erectile dysfunction seen after electrical injury include:

(1) neurogenic

(2) vasculogenic

(3) psychogenic

 

Risk factors for erectile dysfunction following electrical injury:

(1) development of a peripheral neuropathy

(2) development of autonomic neuropathy

(3) depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

(4) central nervous system injury

(5) pre-existing comorbid conditions (diabetes, drugs, etc)
