Description

Walser et al developed equations for estimating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) from serum creatinine in a patient with advanced chronic renal failure. The authors are from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.


 

Patient selection: serum creatinine > 0.177 mM (> 2 mg/dL)

 

Parameters:

(1) serum creatinine in millimoles per liter (not µmol/L)

(2) age in years

(3) weight in kilograms

 

estimated GFR for a male in mL per min per 1.73 square meters BSA =

= (7.57 / (serum creatinine)) - (0.103 * (age in years)) + (0.096 * (weight in kg)) - 6.66

 

estimated GFR for a female in mL per min per 1.73 square meters BSA =

= (6.05 / (serum creatinine)) - (0.08 * (age in years)) + (0.08 * (weight in kg)) - 4.81

 

Simplified versions were:

= (7.58 / (serum creatinine in mM)) - 4.29 =

= (86 / (serum creatinine in mg/dL)) - 4.29
