Description

Kuriyan and Kurpad developed equations for estimating total muscle mass in young Indian males based on mid-arm measurements. The authors are from St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences in Bangalore. India.

Parameters:

(1) mid-arm circumference in cm (MAC) in cm

(2) triceps skinfold thickness in cm (measured in mm)

(3) corrected arm muscle area (CAMA) in square cm

CAMA in males =

= ((((MAC in cm) - ((PI) * (triceps skinfold thickness in cm)))^2) / (4 * (PI))) - 10

where:

• 10 represents the bone area in males.

• Measurement of MAC is discussed in 02.03 (above).

Equations with Weight

These are listed on page 125:

muscle mass in kilograms =

= (0.265 * (weight in kg)) + (0.672 * (MAC)) - 5.314

muscle mass in kilograms =

= (0.309 * (weight in kg)) + (0.202 * (CAMA)) + 4.971

Equations without Height, Reference

These are listed on page 124:

muscle mass in kilograms =

= (1.641 * (MAC)) - 15.580

muscle mass in kilograms =

= (0.496* (CAMA)) + 10.183

Equations without Height, Alternative

These are listed on page 125:

muscle mass in kilograms =

= (1.442 * (MAC)) - 11.065

muscle mass in kilograms =

= (0.50 * (CAMA)) + 9.623
