Description

Bonora et al developed equations for predicting subcutaneous and visceral abdominal adipose tissue (SAT and VAT) from simple anthropometric measurements. The reference method for measuring SAT and VAT is based on the total area seen on abdominal CT or MRI. The authors are from the University of Trento (Italy) and University of Texas at San Antonio.

Patient age range: adults from 22 to 70 years of age

Parameters:

(1) gender

(2) waist circumference in cm (maximum circumference between the xyphoid process and iliac crests, usually at the level of the navel)

(3) age

(4) body mass index (BMI)

(5) hip circumference in cm (at the level of the greater trochanters)

area of visceral abdominal adipose tissue in square cm for males =

= (6.37 * (waist circumference in cm)) - 453.7

area of visceral abdominal adipose tissue in square cm for females =

= (2.62 * (age in years)) + (4.04 * (waist circumference in cm)) - 370.5

area of subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue in square cm for males =

= (5.51 * (hip circumference in cm)) + (9.37 * (BMI in kg per sq m)) - 621

area of subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue in square cm for females =

= (2.26 * (age in years)) + (24.5 * (BMI in kg per sq m)) - 332.9
